Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I don’t know who let me wait so long to read this book, but holy guacamole this is heading onto my favorites of all time list. I LOVED The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo SO much. I read it in a day! I say on my couch and plowed through the pages. I literally said out loud, “Okay one more chapter,” until I decided to just give up on any plans I had and finish it in one sitting. So worth it.

Synopsis: “Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn's luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the '80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn's story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.” —from the publisher

What I Liked:

  1. Everything?? I can’t even write a professional review of this book but I NEED to try. This book Is about SO much and I loved the representation and normalization of bisexuality. We need more of that in literature!

  2. The Characters—Evelyn is such a badass and I loved her journey to Hollywood and fame. Plus Celia and Harry, Connor, all of them! I adored their relationships.

  3. The Writing—I’ve only read one other book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & The Six, which I also loved, but I 10000000% see why she is an autobuy author for so many. Her writing is magic; it’s compelling and interesting and she knows just where to end a chapter so that you must keep reading.

What Didn’t Work:

  1. Absolutely nothing.

TW/CW: cancer, loss of a loved one, domestic abuse, alcohol abuse

Character Authenticity: 5/5 Steam Rating: 1/5 Overall Rating: 5/5

I know I am the last human being on the face of the earth who had yet to read this book. But on the off chance that you haven’t, READ THIS BOOK. Then come chat because I am not over it.
